Tuesday:
We went bowling and I actually bowled well, getting 168 for my highest score in a long time! I've never actually broken the 200 barrier, getting 199 when I was like 14, and never topping that since. My goal is to break 200 this next Tuesday, haha
Wed - Fri:
I had a going away dinner for one of my friends on Wed, a Stanford basketball game on Thursday, and Friday I don't normally work out (went to a wine bar with friends), so I went 4 days without working out, gotta say I felt kind of off by not working out. I might try to start working out in the morning, that way I can ensure that I work out as often as I want to, regardless of what else is going on.
Garmin broke:
When I was getting ready for my Saturday run, a piece of plastic next to the band from my Garmin decided to break off, so now I need to call Garmin to see if I can get a new one or not. If just the band broke I would be fine, but a plastic piece that connects the watch to the band broke, so I will need to replace it most likely. I was considering going with the super glue approach, but then I might be afraid of when it might break off next, haha
Saturday:
As Morgan says, it was a "hills are for hero's" weekend on the trails!
It was only lightly drizzling, so I met my friend Mark for a run in Stevens Creek Park. It was my first run in 5 days, so I definitely felt a little rusty. I also hadn't ran hills in a long time, so the hills definitely hurt. The trail we did was historically a hill that I normally destroy (it is a mile long hill straight up), but today the hill destroyed me, haha Fun times out there though. I need to try to work in at least 1 hill workout a week to keep my hills skills up. The trail was definitely a little muddy in some spots, but it wasn't too bad. I think we went 4 miles or so. Without my garmin and heartrate monitor I felt naked! haha
Mark and his dog Max
Good views of the bay area from the peak of the hill
lot of mist in the air
I look sort of confused here, haha
Sunday AM:
Due to the rain the past 6 days, we decided to do another run that we thought wouldn't be that muddy. We went back to Stevens Creek Park, and did a mix of a run that we had never done before. It ended up being one of my favorite runs that we have done. It was a great mix of hills, flats and downhills. It also covers a lot of different terrain. I could see doing this run a lot if the trails are muddy. The run went great, I felt solid on the hills, and felt like I had my hill legs back. I think this run ended up being about 5 miles.
The weather was perfect for running - it was a crisp 45 degrees or so, just warm enough for short sleeves
The trail is a mix of wide fire trail with singletrack

Sunday PM:
Next activity for Sunday Funday was soccer. It had been raining for 6 days straight around here (but it was nice today), so I was nervous that the field was going to be muddy. The field actually wasn't in that bad of shape. We had 4 on 4 at first, then 5 on 4, then we ended up playing 3 on 3 because we are hardcore, haha I think we played 2 hours or so, it was a lot of fun. My legs are definitely feeling great out there now, I was running non stop around the field and always felt like I could have gone longer. I also had one goal where I was on a breakaway, then kicked the ball and did a somersault to avoid running into a guy and scored the goal, haha I bet I ran about 4-5 miles total on the field, seems like I was constantly running - my legs are dying right now =)
Has your garmin ever broken before? Do you also ever feel mentally off if you don't workout for a while?
If my Garmin broke I would have to sit in a corner of the room in a fetal position. I am hopelessly addicted to it.
ReplyDeleteGreat pics. I love the Bay Area. I'm assuming you were in the East Bay. Who knows.
Stanford B-ball? Nice. They're okay, but no where near the 27-1 SDSU Aztecs. Aztecs Fight!
Nice Pics!!! I love the one of my brother and Max! Too cute! Ugh - I know exactly the trail you are talking about at Stevens Creek reservoir, that one's a toughie! I always enjoyed running up the spillway also - good way to work the quads. We did a lot of that there when I was training for soccer.
ReplyDeleteAnd YES I know exactly how you feel about being "off" if you dont work out. I haven't worked out in a week and I feel crappy! Just lazy and lethargic. I have the same problem you do - I have social events almost every night that I don't want to miss out on. I tell myself I'll work out in the morning before work, but then it's SO hard to get up early. Really need to get back on my game, too!
Please keep taking pics - they're really good!
Chris and his Aztecs!
ReplyDeleteHey thanks so much for coming over my blog and for your comment on SF race. I appreciate this a lot!
Chris K - haha on the Garmin, it did feel a little odd not running with it, but I'm starting to get better at guessing when I'm going to max out, so I was okay without it. But I will call Garmin and inquire.
ReplyDeleteI'm from the South Bay (Mountain View), but anywhere in the bay area is pretty close together, haha
Your SDSU Aztecs are doing awesome this year! They have an awesome team this year! Stanford looked bad this year, it was tough to watch after the team was awesome from 1994 to 2008 haha
Kate - I hadn't ran with Mark for a while, it was fun times. Sounds like you're having a great time in London (and surrounding countries), enjoy it!
Caroline - the Aztecs are indeed doing awesome this year, haha
For sure on the SF races - let me know if you have any questions on it. I'm doing the SF half marathon this year (2nd half).
Hey there! Thanks so much for the nice comments on my blog :) And glad to hear that you got out for some nice runs!
ReplyDeleteAs for your Garmin, I've seen some people take the plastic band off completely and get this velcro one. I don't have it but I know it exists! Have a great week.
Man, I feel mentally off after a day. I'm just a loser like that. ;)
ReplyDeleteBummer on the Garmin. Being the mill runner I am - I only wear it at races so-----if this thing freaking breaks - we'll have issues.
Love the photos. Beautiful.
How is the grass so freaking green......amazing.
you. rock. woman.
Emergency: Garmin down!
ReplyDeleteI love my 405!
Page - for sure! your post about potential was awesome. I was already thinking of doing a post that is similar, I'll just do a Ctrl+C when I draft it, haha Thanks for the heads up on the velcro band, I might look into that. My garmin is only 1 year old, so it doesn't seem like it should break this easily.
ReplyDeleteEMZ - yea, I should probably start trying to workout every day (I try to do every other day during tax season or the winter). I don't know how you do all your runs on the dreadmill, I would die! haha I can only handle 5 miles before I go crazy! haha Thanks on the photos!
Andrew - I have a 305, and love it. Good reminder, I need to call Garmin tomorrow!
To answer your HR Question on my blog.
ReplyDeleteFrom notes from my coach:
my Resting HR is 45.
Max HR (MHR): 172.06 [2-6.9-(0.67-age)]
MHR - RHR = HR Reserve (HRR)
HRR x .60 = % HRR
% HRR + RHR = Target HR
60% effort target: 128.6
70% effort target: 133.9
80% effort target: 146.6
We want to keep your HR somewhere in the 60% -70% (more on the lower end) when doing your base runs.
Tempo type runs should be in the 75%-85% range.
Hi! The weather has been nasty here too, in fact TODAY it was snowing and about 37 degrees. I went to the gym yesterday and today too because I'm just too much of a wimp to run outside in that type of weather. I actually hate skipping a day, I feel crappy now when I don't run. I am starting to believe it really is the only thing that keeps me somewhat sane, especially if I'm worried about something or needing to get my mind off...
ReplyDeleteI don't actually run with a gps, I did download an app for my phone that tracks everything but I don't think I will be able to do the majority of my training runs with my phone, when I run alone I push hard and holding the phone would annoy me quickly. If I run with friends we do more of an 11ish mile pace or even slower, so I can run with my phone if I do that. I hope Garmin will replace/fix your watch, not a cheap toy lol.
I really enjoy the photos, what a beautiful area you have to run in! I mostly just map my routes through neighborhoods.... I don't have running trails or waterfront or anything in the desert. BTW, feel free to subscribe, I'm trying to update my blog frequently but I need readers =P
